Managing Director & CEO's Statement on Thermal Insulation

Your Excellency Mr. Qassim Sultan - Director General of Dubai Municipality
Ladies & Gentlemen

On behalf of DEWA and myself, I am pleased to welcome you, and thank the Municipality for its great efforts to the service of the society.

We are here today to launch the campaign for thermal insulation in buildings, which is the fruit of the cooperation at all levels between the Municipality and DEWA.

The application of the thermal insulation is one of the outcomes of such cooperation, and we are here to launch the joint awareness campaign to enhance the society awareness about the importance of thermal insulation application.

The nature of the environment, high temperature and the need to use air-conditions resulted in high consumption of electricity. The thermal insulation system will reduce the consumption of electricity in air-conditioning by 40%, which will benefit customers, proprietors and the general public and will be a great incentive for initiating its application.

The peak load of electricity last year reached 2442 MW, marking an annual increase of 9%, and in order to meet this development, DEWA started enhancing its generation capabilities by 1200 MW, and thereby are tenders that will be floated for the construction of 700 MW stations, which will cost billions of Dirhams.

The Authority adopted the Demand side management for:

  1. Reducing capital and operational expenditure for construction of power stations, transmission, and distribution networks.
  2. Application of programs for the rationalization of power consumption, which constitutes the thermal insulation as its backbone.
  3. Reduction of the system peak load, which contributes to enhancing its efficiency and performance.
  4. Reduction of electricity demand growth for electricity without affecting the national economy.
  5. Reduction of the line loss in the electric system and for customers.
  6. Reduction of electricity power cost for the customers and DEWA.

Enhancing the efficiency of the electric system will positively reflect on the environment due to the reduction of gaseous emissions from the power stations, which will contribute towards preservation of the environment, and rationalization of the natural resources such as heavy fuel, gas, water, etc., and will contribute in the sustainable development processes.

DEWA uses the most modern technologies for the preservation of environment such as the equipment for reduction of the gaseous emissions by switching to natural gas, which is environmentally considered the cleanest fuel.

The conversion from the simple to combined cycle in most power stations, contributed to enhancing the efficiency of the power stations by 30-45%, and the thermal efficiency by 84% in "G" Station, which led to the reduction of the gaseous emissions and contributed to the preservation of environment.

We wish also to compliment the Chairman of the Thermal Insulation Committee and the Committee members for their extensive efforts in the preparation of the technical information and media materials for proceeding in the application of this system in buildings, which solicit our thanks and appreciation.

We wish to reiterate our thanks to H. E. the Director General of Municipality, and the audience and invite all public media to cooperate with us in spreading the awareness of thermal insulation for their important role in this respect and serving society.

Thank you
