DEWA launches annual ‘Let’s Make This Summer Green’ campaign to raise awareness on rational use of electricity and water

Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer. MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has launched its annual ‘Let’s Make This Summer Green’ campaign. The campaign encourages members of society to rationalise their use of electricity and water in the summer months and adopt sensible practices to protect the environment and reduce their carbon footprint. The three-month campaign includes simple tips to reduce electricity and water use. These include setting ACs at 24° Celsius, rescheduling energy-intensive appliances away from peak load hours of 12-6pm, using smart irrigation systems, and fixing water leakages. The campaign also includes tips before travelling and other recommendations that everyone can follow.

‘Let’s Make This Summer Green’ campaign features a comprehensive programme to engage all customers and society members in the efforts to protect the environment and natural resources. Apart from awareness tips on social media, the campaign includes over 50 visits and awareness lectures in government organisations, private companies, shopping malls, union co-ops, Modhesh World, as well as other gatherings. This aims to spread the principles of environmental sustainability and urge the public to rationalise their electricity and water use, especially during the summer months and the holiday season.

“DEWA places environmental protection and sustainability of natural resources at the top of its priorities. It launches an integrated set of initiatives, programmes, and awareness-raising activities throughout the year for all customers to raise awareness on the importance of rationalising electricity and water use. The ‘Let’s Make This Summer Green’ annual campaign is part of our efforts to engage customers and society members in concerted efforts to protect the environment, preserve natural resources, and encourage different sectors to adopt a conscious and responsible lifestyle to consolidate environmental sustainability and promote sustainable development in Dubai. This supports the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 to make Dubai the city with the lowest carbon footprint in the world by 2050, the Demand Side Management Strategy to reduce electricity and water use by 30% by 2030, and DEWA’s vision to become a globally leading sustainable innovative corporation,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

“Let’s Make This Summer Green’ campaign has achieved significant results over the past years demonstrating the importance of involving all stakeholders, in joint efforts to protect the environment and reduce our carbon footprint. The campaign targeted 110,000 people during the past four years through 300 visits and lectures organised by DEWA’s Conservation Team. Through these efforts, DEWA aims to make these simple practices a culture and daily habit for all,” said Amal Koshak, Vice President of Marketing and Corporate Communications at DEWA.

The campaign tips include conducting regular maintenance for AC units including cleaning and replacing filters, ensuring all doors and windows are closed to prevent cold air from escaping, unplugging electrical appliances, irrigating plants and gardens in the morning or evening to reduce evaporation, closing water valves or using a specialist to check the water supply before travelling, to avoid leakages. These tips can be accessed on DEWA’s smart app or website www.dewa.gov.ae
