DSO to Install Seven Additional Stations by 2017 Dubai Silicon Oasis Authority (DSOA), the regulatory body for Dubai Silicon Oasis (DSO), Dubai’s integrated free zone technology park, today inaugurated its first charging station for electric vehicles at an event held at its headquarters, in collaboration with Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and CEO of DEWA and His Excellency Dr Mohammed Alzarooni, Vice Chairman and CEO of DSOA attended the ceremony along with senior officials from the government and private sectors. As a strategic partner of Dubai’s smart city initiative and under the guidance and patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, DSOA has become the first free zone in Dubai to install a charging station for electric vehicles within its premises. DSOA’s efforts articulate DEWA’s recent announcement on the inauguration of its first charging station at its headquarters as part of phase one plans towards encouraging people to purchase or rent zero emission electric cars. Commenting on this step, Al Tayer said: “In line with the Smart Dubai initiative, launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make Dubai the happiest city on earth that provides the most efficient and seamless experience and is the safest place for residents and visitors, and in accordance with the Dubai Plan 2021 and the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030 to establish Dubai as a global role model of the highest standards of energy efficiency, DEWA continues today implementing the electric vehicle charging station infrastructure initiative(Green Charger). DEWA is collaborating with a number of national and private organisations to implement this leading project. DEWA’s overarching goal is to install 100 charging stations in Dubai by end of 2015.” “We congratulate DSOA for becoming the first free zone to take this step towards achieving Dubai’s goals towards sustainable development,” added Al Tayer. On his part, HE Dr Mohammed Alzarooni said: “At DSOA, we are proud of this important milestone in the direction set by the leadership to position Dubai as the smartest and happiest city in the world. The success is testimony to the collaborative partnership we share with DEWA. The installation of the charging station for electric vehicles is a great move towards reducing our carbon foot-print and providing a healthy environment and clean air for the people of the UAE. We will further leverage our collaboration and advanced infrastructure to install additional charging stations at the Silicon Park, which is currently under construction, in addition to other DSOA-owned buildings.” Dr Alzarooni added: “Electric transportation is the future and DSOA has begun introducing these technologies within the integrated free zone park in order to keep pace with changing trends. The charging stations will be used by electric vehicles that will be used by on-ground security patrols and the attending facilities management units within DSO.” Earlier in 2014, a MoU was signed by Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer of DEWA, and Dr Mohammed Alzarooni, Vice Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of DSOA. As part of the agreement, DSOA is mandated to support DEWA’s smart initiatives to install photovoltaic solar panels, develop efficient and sustainable smart grids applications, and set up the infrastructure for charging stations for electric vehicles.
