DEWA releases statistics supporting its delivery of reliable and efficient electricity and water services

During 2012 GIS Users Group Conference – Alstom Grid and in accordance with key performance indicators HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), has emphasized during the 2012 GIS (Gas-Insulated Substations) Users Group Conference, organized by Alstom Grid for the first time in Dubai at the Meydan Hotel, that DEWA is steadfastly committed to its vision to become a sustainable world-class utility in accordance with the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, for a sustainable future for Dubai. “At DEWA, we manage the entire value chain of electricity and water for our Emirate; from the electricity generation and water desalination to our transmission and distribution networks to the homes, businesses and industries of Dubai. We deliver electricity and water services at the highest levels of Availability, Efficiency and Reliability. DEWA has always been concentrating on developing sustainable electricity and water production, transmission and distribution networks and supply systems,” said Al Tayer. “Between 1990 and 2011, peak power demand increased by six-fold. To meet this, our power generation installed capacity has increased seven-fold and currently our power generation capacity is 9,646 megawatts. DEWA has fueled the growth of Dubai and we are now ready for the next stage of fuelling its future and progress. Our power transmission network has expanded to transport power from production sites to the demand centers. During this period, DEWA established the 400 kilovolt power transmission network, which now consists of 17 GIS sub-stations. At the same time, we have also expanded our 132 kilovolt network, with an increase in the number of bulk supply Gas-Insulated Substations from 11 to 165,” added Al Tayer. “As I have previously stated, DEWA’s vision is to become A Sustainable World-Class utility. We have an exceptional track record in delivering secure and reliable power supplies. We are confident to say that our key performance indicators support our Vision statement. Our Transmission Line Availability for 2011 is 99.981%. Substation availability is 99.99980% and DEWA has achieved results that rival and even beat benchmarks for the private sector, surpassing 10 of the best European and American companies in efficiency, availability and reliability. As for customer minutes lost per year, DEWA’s figures reached 5.77 minutes, significantly better than 16.4 minutes recorded by counterparts in Europe and the US.” “Turning our attention to this important conference, participants have the opportunity to share important insights, experience and expertise on topics such as the vision for future networks characteristics that will guide developments in GIS, expectations from manufacturers, and other important areas. There is no doubt that innovation and engineering excellence, based on the feedback from GIS users and manufacturers’ research and development, will contribute considerably to enhancing the reliability and performance of GIS installations as key components of all transmission and sub-transmission networks. As users of GIS, which constitute the backbone of transmission networks, DEWA considers the reliability of its equipment and consequently the network, as well as the after-sales support and commitment of the manufacturer, as essential components in our relationship with partnering manufacturers,” added Al Tayer. “DEWA has years of experience in using GIS technology up to 400 kilovolts and can significantly contribute to such gatherings, and also learn from other experiences. Furthermore, this type of Users Group forum should facilitate alignment from Factory Product experts with their customers’ needs and even define a roadmap for further Research and Development and future Investments,” said Al Tayer. “I am sure that such a forum of experts from both sides provides an excellent opportunity to share experiences and to take back fresh idea that can help improve designs, solve teething troubles and increase the reliability of networks. Hosting such a global forum fits into and supports our core mission which is: Meeting customer satisfaction and promoting Dubai’s vision through delivery of electricity and water services at a world-class level of reliability, efficiency, safety and environment by a competent workforce and effective partnerships; supporting resources sustainability,” concluded His Excllency.
