DEWA organises online activities for students during new school year

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is organising various online activities for students from 2—17 September, on how to protect the environment and prevent the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. These activities are part of DEWA’s Conservation Award and the Marhaba Madrasati. The activities are timed to start with the new school year, and are part of DEWA’s social responsibility.

DEWA is taking part in Marhaba Madrasati, which is organised by the Education Zone in Dubai under the hashtag #WeOnlyGetStronger, to welcome 6,000 students from 30 schools in Dubai and help them to actively and diligently start their school year. This is through a comprehensive virtual programme for  kindergarten and primary students. DEWA has also specified a day for these activities at centres for people of determination.

This year’s event included awareness sessions, entertainment and cultural contests as well as the Noor and Hayat animated series. DEWA is distributing the activity programme and materials to all the nurseries, schools and universities in Dubai. They can use these materials to promote conservation and remind students of the importance of protecting the earth’s precious natural resources.

As the new school year begins, DEWA extended the submission of the 14th Conservation Award due to the exceptional circumstances of COVID-19. . DEWA launched the Conservation Award in partnership with the Ministry of Education and the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KHDA) to spread awareness among students on conservation. It also recognises educational facilities for their efforts to reduce waste. For the first time, DEWA opened the registration for the award through its smart application, which will close in May 2021. It will be open for two academic years to help schools and students achieve the Conservation Award’s outcomes and objectives.

“DEWA attaches great importance to the next generation and strives to enhance a culture of conservation among them. This is in accordance with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, launched by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, to make Dubai the city with the lowest carbon footprint in the world. DEWA partners with different public and private organisations to launch initiatives that create a positive environment to help students to actively begin their academic year and build their sense of loyalty to the UAE,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

“DEWA’s activities with Marhaba Madrasati this year are especially important. Our participation supports the nation’s efforts to limit the coronavirus and engage society in protecting the environment and its natural resources. We do this by educating students on preventive measures against COVID-19. DEWA has reached out to 15,000 students through the initiative since 2017. The initiative is an ideal opportunity to introduce students to sustainability and the best practices to conserve electricity and water consumption at school and home,” added Al Tayer.

“We are glad to continue working in cooperation with DEWA to provide the best educational environment for our dear students. We highly appreciate DEWA’s sustainable and quality initiatives that support educational and growth efforts, especially in this exceptional education year and the circumstances in dealing with the coronavirus epidemic. Marhaba Madrasati has a special importance this year. We must all expand partnerships to provide psychological and educational support to students, either those returning to schools or online learning. Supporting students is an ethical priority and a social responsibility for everyone, either at home, school, families and all categories and organisations of the local community,” said Ghaya Al Muhairi, Acting Director of Dubai Educational Zone.
