World Energy Day is an initiative endorsed by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, during the World Energy Forum that was held in Dubai in 2012. The initiative is celebrated every year on 22 October with a series of events to raise awareness of the importance of energy conservation and sustainability. The wise leadership of the UAE, is eager to diversify our nation’s energy sources to achieve a balance between development and the environment to preserve the rights of future generations to live in a clean and safe environment.

The activities during World Energy Day highlight sustainability, energy conservation, impact of climate change, need for reduction of carbon emissions and environmental protection. It also stresses the importance of providing safe and sustainable energy for all, promoting national efforts that support the world’s vision for sustainability. The activities will also identify solutions to current and future challenges faced by the energy sector, promoting policies that facilitate the sharing of knowledge among different countries while increasing our reliance on renewable and clean energy sources.

World Energy Day coincides with Green Week, the annual event organised by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). Starting on 21 October, Green Week will feature awareness events on sustainability, environmental protection, and natural resource issues, including the 20th Water, Energy, Technology, and Environment Exhibition (WETEX 2018); the 3rd Dubai Solar Show; and the World Green Economy Summit (WGES 2018).

This occasion emphasises the importance of consolidating joint efforts of organisations and individuals, so that we can reduce habits that harm the environment and deplete its natural resources. It also aims to enhance environmental education, paving the way for a conscious and responsible generation.

DEWA supports Dubai’s sustainable development by launching projects and initiatives that align with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 to make Dubai a global hub for clean energy and green economy by providing 75% of its total power output from clean sources by 2050, guaranteeing a sustainable future for us and the generations to come.
