Dubai Electricity & Water Authority (DEWA) | Second, continuously seeking use of cleaner sources of energy including renewables, nuclear, clean coal technology (IGCC- integrated Gasification Combined Cycle),etc HE asserted that a diversified power generation portfolio, which combines natural gas, renewables and alternative energy sources, is now becoming a more concrete eventuality. HE made reference to the fact that, nuclear energy has recently received unprecedented attention globally, and the main drives are: * The need to meet the growing energy demands. * Diversification of power generation portfolio, in light of fuel price volatility and availability constrains. * Increasing pressure for available and affordable energy and water, further to lower CO2 emissions. However , Mr. Al Tayer ,raised the alarm ,stating that nuclear energy will not provide a quick fix solution to the capacity issue ,nor change the dominance of gas fired power plant in the region ,in the medium or long term. Before concluding his speech, Mr. Al Tayer pointed out , at present , renewable energy is considered an important in the power industry , even taking into account both the impact of the present global financial crisis and the drop in commodity prices , at the same time, emphasizing that ,the future of the renewables is very promising ,in terms of technology maturity ,cost reduction and provision of significant growth opportunity for utilities. Finally, MD&CEO referred to the increasing supply-demand imbalance that is being driven both by the depletion of non-renewable water and the demand growth fuelled by parallel population and GDP growth, considering water scarcity as the key challenge of this century, which needs more attention by all. HE, MD &CEO concluded his speech by expressing his optimism on such conferences and demonstrating his confidence on such summits and their positive contribution in protecting the future of Mankind in a sustainable fashion. The summit which will be accompanied by a conference and exhibition will continue up to Thursday 21st. 2009.

HE Saeed M. Al Tayer, MD&CEO DEWA, had today inaugurated the Utilities Expansion Summit at Royal Miraj Hotel Dubai ,which will last for three days, remarkably attended by VIPs, international experts and leaders of international organizations related to energy affairs. The Summit deliberates the challenges of adequate supply provision of energy and water ,which will meet the increasing demand for several purposes ,caused by high population growth ,economic development and industrial expansion ,further to other fields which increase the demand to electricity and water services in unprecedented rates. The speakers will view their anticipation in this field , focusing introduction of state of the arts methods and technologies ,such as nuclear energy ,excellent management of resources and demand to meet the various needs. HE, MD&CEO addressed the inauguration speech, highlighting the rapid growth in electricity and water demand, making clear the three main challenges which are of major concern namely ; Growth of Demand ,Increasing Resources Productivity and the Environment. HE stated that the ever increasing demand of power and water ,which has been caused by high population growth and economic expansion has never been greater ,this has, in turn , resulted in unprecedented capacity additions coupled with spiraling build costs ,from one side and growing concerns over fuel feedstock availability ,mainly gas in this region ,from the other side .HE added that ,this situation imposed considerable challenges to overcome ,in order to keep the lights on and the water supplies running. HE revealed that the global warming has now become a matter of fact. With the climate change crisis looming and non-renewable fuels dwindling worldwide, energy alternatives are becoming increasingly more relevant. Reducing the Green House Gas emission to low concentration levels in line with Kyoto requirements is an environmental responsibility to be shared by all. Mr. Al Tayer, mentioned, To maintain the supply-demand balance, there are two strategic approaches, to be adopted, while ensuring environment preservation: *
