DEWA celebrates World Environment Day - 2010 through Conservation Activities

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) in line with its strategic objective of mitigating global warming and carbon emissions for a sustainable life, celebrated on June 5th the World Environment Day, as part of the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP),by holding outreach activities in Dubai to promote best electricity and water consumption practices. DEWA, in collaboration with Dubai Silicon Oasis, held a smart exhibition on the 4th of June at Dubai Festival City, aimed at educating children on the importance and need to save electricity and water. The young apprentices were taken through a journey of serious conservation messages that were skillfully embedded in playful cartoon visuals on posters and roll-ups. DEWA staff explained the implications depicted in the exhibited displays. The stand were manned by dedicated members of the DEWA conservation team who playfully educated the young audience with easy tips as on how not to waste electricity and water and how they could save on energy and water consumption and usage. Visitors, young and old alike, got a dose of education on consumption-sustainability besides the memorable gifts. The exhibition ended with a collective pledge undertaken by the children. In continuation of the World Environment Day celebration DEWA will conduct another exhibition at the Dubai Land Department on the 8th of June to promote the green building concept. On this occasion, HE Saeed Mohammad Al Tayer, MD and CEO - Dubai Electricity and Water Authority said, “Dubai Electricity and Water Authority in accordance with the guidelines set out by Dubai’s environmental plan endeavors every opportunity to protect and preserve the natural resources through a year-round efficient conservation initiatives and programmes.” DEWA recently launched ‘Green Building Regulations - Phase II” during Wetex 2010 as the central theme of the activity. The topic drew overwhelming response and enquiries from the visitors on the subject of electricity, water and renewable energy efficiencies. They showcased simple technologies aimed at minimizing electricity and water wastages and included the display of efficient aerators and energy saver lamps. Original Green Building Regulations along with Highlights were freely given to the visitors along with the DEWA Green Box that contained smart faucet fittings and energy-saver lamps with detailed instructions on how to install these utility-saving measures at their homes. “The message destined in our outreach activities aim at engaging our stakeholders, individuals and institutions to adopt new positive attitudes towards the environment, in order to preserve our natural resources for our future generations,” commented Amal Koshak, Senior Manager - Demand and Tariff Management Department during the activities of the World Environment Day.
