DEWA Highlights the Importance of Energy Conservation during the Holy Month of Ramadan

Conservation team completes fifth edition of ‘To Guide is to Care’ Education Campaign The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) successfully completed the fifth edition of its “To Guide is to Care” campaign, a grassroots education initiative conducted during the Holy Month of Ramadan to raise awareness of the importance of electricity and water conservation. With conservation rooted firmly in Islamic principles, DEWA says its annual Ramadan conservation campaign has proven an effective strategy for working in partnership with community groups to educate residents about the responsible use of electricity and water. Designed to reach a broad cross section of the Dubai community, the month-long campaign involved a series of workshops, knowledge exchange sessions and information kiosks at mosques, local parks, shopping centres, hospitals and high profile Ramadan events. These activities were supported by promotional materials including posters and leaflets on ablution and conservation tips from an Islamic perspective. In collaboration with the Dubai Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing (DTCM), the DEWA conservation team presented the conservation message to guests during the 9th Ramadan Forum in Al Twar. It also worked with the organisers of the Dubai International Holy Quran Award to set up an information kiosk onsite at their venue. DEWA says its annual Ramadan campaign has grown year-on-year since it started in 2006. What began with two community presentations and a brochure has expanded to over 15 activities across Dubai’s major neighbourhoods and a comprehensive library of information resources to encourage best practices in electricity and water consumption. Commenting on the 2010 Ramadan campaign Amal Koshak, DEWA’s Senior Manager – Demand and Tariff Management Department, said: “We have a collective responsibility to preserve, protect and manage the well-being of our environment. That requires each of us to be rational in our energy consumption habits. DEWA believes very strongly in sharing information about conservation to empower individuals with the knowledge they need to reduce water and electricity wastage. Our Ramadan campaign is just one way in which DEWA is working with the community of Dubai to secure our future for generations to come.” Koshak added that its sustained community awareness drive is starting to transform consumers’ attitudes towards energy consumption. “DEWA’s ‘To Guide is to Care’ campaign is now in its fifth year and we are really pleased to have observed a positive change in consumer attitudes over that time. The people who we meet with during these sessions are genuinely willing to try new measures to conserve electricity and water by adopting sensible consumption practices and smart technologies available today. The smallest change can make a big difference - DEWA remains committed to spreading this message of conservation to help all our customers understand that they can all play their part in protecting our planet.”
