Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has won the Sword of Honour and Globe of Honour from the British Safety Council for excellence in health, safety, and environment. This year, DEWA is one of five organisations worldwide awarded with the Globe of Honour, which DEWA has achieved for the third consecutive year, and one of 50 organisations worldwide awarded with the Sword of Honour, which DEWA has achieved for the seventh consecutive year. DEWA is one of only four organisations globally who were awarded with both the Sword of Honour and Globe of Honour. Dr. Yousef Al Akraf, Executive Vice President of Business Support and Human Resources at DEWA received the awards on behalf of DEWA at an awards ceremony at the historic Drapers’ Hall in London. HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA dedicated the awards to HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. “The vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, have always guided us towards achieving excellence and reaching the number one position globally at all levels. Winning both the Sword of Honour and Globe of Honour demonstrates DEWA’s efforts and strategy to implement the highest standards in health, safety and the environment,” he said. “To achieve our vision to become a sustainable world-class utility, DEWA constantly strives to implement the most stringent standards in health, safety, and the environment. DEWA’s experienced and qualified staff help it achieve its commitments. We adopt the best international standards and practices in health and safety in our current and future projects, to enhance a safe and healthy work environment to serve our customers, partners, and society as a whole for a sustainable future for generations to come,” added Al Tayer. “The Health and Safety Sword of Honour and Environmental Globe of Honour awards provide an opportunity to publicly recognise this contribution and encourage good performance and practise in the management and control of safety, health and environmental risks. This important work reduces the costs to society and individuals arising from poor management of real risks,” said David Cameron MP, Prime Minister of the United Kingdom, in a congratulatory message to the winners. “Our warmest congratulations to Dubai Electricity and Water Authority. These awards recognise and celebrate the efforts of businesses who are at the forefront of managing health, safety and environmental risks,” said Neal Stone, Policy and Communications Director at the British Safety Council. “The Sword and Globe of Honour winning organisations share a commitment and resolve to achieving the highest standards of health, safety and environmental management and to keeping their employees and those affected by their work activities healthy and safe. We are delighted that they are partners in helping achieve our vision that no one should be injured or made ill at work,” added Stone. “This remarkable accomplishment is the result of following the highest standards and best international practices related to quality, health, safety, and the environment as part of the integrated administrative systems to establish the foundations of occupational health, safety, and environmental sustainability among staff and customers at DEWA,’ noted Al Akraf. To compete for the Sword of Honour and Globe of Honour, an organisation had to achieve the maximum five stars in the British Safety Council’s audit scheme from August 2013 to July 2014, and demonstrate to an independent panel of experts that they are excellent in their health and safety, and environmental management throughout the business.
