Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has organised a series of workshops on sustainability for its staff, stakeholders from the government and private sectors, partners, and contractors. The workshops support DEWA’s commitment to encouraging and supporting creative ideas that contribute to developing organisational performance. They also support its strategy to spread a culture of sustainability among its partners and staff, and its efforts to enhance the competitiveness of the UAE, and Dubai’s position as a global hub for sustainability and green economy.
Organising the workshops builds on the success of similar workshops DEWA organised last year whose outcome was used in preparing the second sustainability report, which DEWA launched in April 2015. “To support DEWA’s vision to become a sustainable innovative world-class utility, we work to establish sustainability as an integral part of DEWA’s corporate strategy and organisational culture, and across all its projects and activities. A survey conducted by DEWA and included staff across all divisions and locations, revealed that there is a clear personal commitment from staff.
The results of the survey, which was analysed by AWAKE consultancy, are very positive and above average compared with other global organisations,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA. “The workshops that DEWA organises for its partners, stakeholders, and staff highlight DEWA’s sustainability performance and practices.
The outcomes will be used in preparing the next sustainability report, in accordance with the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI). The GRI produces a globally-recognised sustainability reporting standard, used by organisations around the world to communicate their sustainability performance and impact.
The workshops also define future targets to improve efficiency and effectiveness of energy and water in the region, and prepare a roadmap that will be the cornerstone for enhancing sustainable energy and protecting natural resources,” added Al Tayer. “The workshops cover a number of topics including sustainability, energy conservation, climate change, reducing carbon emissions, environmental protection, and other topics that form the foundations of sustainable development,” said Waleed Salman, Executive Vice President of Strategy & Business Development, DEWA.
The second sustainability report addressed the most important sustainability issues, such as economic development, energy efficiency and climate change, customer relations, water availability and quality, environmental protection, employee relations, stakeholders and community.
The report showcases DEWA’s major areas of work, highlighting many of its successful sustainability examples. The workshops attracted a wide participation from the public and private sectors
