Dubai Supreme Council of Energy to promote resources sustainability at C40 Cities Climate Leadership Group

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), has stated that, “Dubai joining the C40 is the result of the wise directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and of a series of plans, programmes, and initiatives launched by His Highness, including the long-term national Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative to build a green economy in the UAE. This initiative enhances sustainable development and achieves the aspirations of citizens and residents, thereby offering a brighter future for Dubai.”

Al Tayer made these observations during a press conference to mark Dubai’s entry into the C40. HE Abdullah Al Shaibani, Secretary-General of the Dubai Executive Council, HE Matar Al Tayer, Director General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), HE Essa Al Maidoor, Deputy Director General of Dubai Municipality, HE Ahmed Buti Al Muhairbi, Secretary General of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, and Sanjay Sridhar, C40 Regional Director for South and West Asia. The conference was held in the Godolphin ballroom at Emirates Towers hotel.

Al Tayer also highlighted that this is a step towards the UAE Vision 2021 and Dubai Plan 2021, to put a roadmap in place to guarantee ambitious initiatives and develop projects that combine economic development with sustainable energy and a clean and safe environment. This helps to make Dubai a smart and sustainable city that achieves sustainability of resources and provides a clean, healthy and sustainable environment. It also helps to achieve a green economy, and establish sustainable communities for generations to come. 

DEWA has launched three pioneering initiatives to support the Smart City initiative, launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, to make Dubai the smartest city in the world within three years. These initiatives comprise the Smart Applications initiative using smart meters and grids, Shams Dubai, which encourages residents and building owners to install photovoltaic solar panels on their rooftops to generate electricity and connecting them to DEWA’s grid, and the Green Charger initiative, to develop the infrastructure for electric vehicle charging stations in Dubai.

“Joining the C40 will allow us to exchange experience and skills to handle issues relating to climate change, and adapting with them to limit environmental risks. We will also have the ability to review the best and latest international documentation, road maps and decision-making procedures, which can be used to mitigate current challenges. This is in addition to the opportunity to participate in regional and international events, to showcase Dubai’s successes,” added Al Tayer. 

After joining, Dubai will become a member of the Carbon Disclosure Project, which is the best method, used by the C40, to measure the effects of the procedures implemented in Dubai t encourage sustainable development, climate change and decreased carbon dioxide emissions. It will also allow communication between like-minded parties and experts, to improve at all government capabilities, and guarantee better service.
