Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is extending its Neighbourhood Campaign as part of its 44th UAE National Day celebrations and its continuous efforts to raise community awareness on the importance of Dubai’s sustainable development. The move shows DEWA’s full support for pride in national identity, emphasises the importance of saving electricity and water, and promote social work and direct contact with all segments of society in residential areas. The campaign reflects DEWA’s commitment to encouraging environmental awareness among all members of society and promoting the sustainable development of Dubai.
The campaign involves field visits to several neighbourhoods and housing complexes across the emirate by a specialist team from DEWA who are transported via a bus specially designed for the campaign, which they share with Dubai Police. The team advises the public on how to rationalise consumption and live a sustainable and environment-friendly lifestyle.
“To support our vision of becoming a sustainable innovative world-class utility, DEWA launches awareness programmes and creative initiatives to encourage all members of society to adopt positive practices in their daily lives such as their responsible use of electricity and water. Over the past six years, DEWA has achieved concrete results thanks to its conservation initiatives. It managed to save 1,163 GWh of electricity and 5.4 billion imperial gallons of water, equivalent to AED 752 million, and over 536,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.
“The Neighbourhood Campaign has been highly successful in raising environmental awareness among the people of Dubai. Its geographic scope has been expanded to include all of the emirate’s residential areas and targets both adults and children. It is important to instil a culture of responsible use of resources among the different age groups, and encourage the adoption of the behaviour and practices that strengthen the foundations of environmental sustainability in Dubai,” added Al Tayer.
Coinciding with this year’s UAE National Day, DEWA’s conservation team visited residential neighbourhoods in Oud Al Muteena and Muhaisnah to distribute gifts of UAE flags and scarves and Noor and Hayat dolls dressed up in the UAE national dress to mark the special occasion. The team also brought along a busload of ice cream to add to the fun.
Last year, the Neighbourhood Campaign team visited three public parks and 1,641 houses in 27 neighbourhoods. These included Al Hebab, Al Faqa, Al Margham, Hatta, Al Lusaily, Al Marmoom, Al Aweer, and other residential areas in Dubai and three parks. The campaign succeeded in saving 714,000 kWh of electricity and 13 million imperial gallons of water, as well as reducing 329,000 kg of carbon dioxide emissions. Savings were valued at approximately AED 829,000.
