DEWA organises training course for 75-strong second batch of Carbon Ambassadors Programme

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), in cooperation with the Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence (DCCE), has organised a three-day training course for 75 students from the Carbon Ambassadors programme about the effects of greenhouse gases on climate change, as part of its efforts to ensure a greener future for the UAE and the world. The course took place at DEWA’s Sustainable Building in Al Quoz.

The course featured sessions held in both English and Arabic, over the duration of 3 days, and addressed the topic of Greenhouse Gases. The course covered the carbon footprint, climate change, and ISO 14064.1-2006. On completing the course, the students took an exam and those who passed received certificates.

“Our support for the Carbon Ambassadors programme is a part of our efforts to achieve the long-term Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative, launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, which supports a diversified economy based on knowledge and innovation, while preserving natural resources and the environment, and reducing our carbon footprint. The training course has advanced the abilities of students, and their involvement in achieving sustainable development objectives. The youth of today are the leaders of tomorrow, who will play a key role in decision-making,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

“DEWA encourages creativity by providing the necessary tools and training programmes that contribute to the growth of cognitive and innovative abilities. We provide all the necessary capabilities for the success of the Carbon Ambassadors programme to engage young people in environmental and sustainability issues. This is achieved by engaging the students in activities, training courses, and workshops on sustainability, climate change, and the environment,” added Al Tayer.

Al Tayer noted that DEWA’s sponsorship meets the United Nations Development Programme’s criteria, with the support of the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Carbon Ambassadors are the next generation of leaders and experts who will implement ambitious national strategies and plans as well as contribute to innovating new initiatives and programmes. They will help achieve the UAE Vision 2021, to make the UAE one of the best countries in the world by 2021, and the Dubai Plan 2021, to make Dubai sustainable with its resources and make its environmental elements clean, healthy, and sustainable.

“DEWA has adopted the Carbon Ambassadors Programme, doubling the number of enrolled students in the second batch to 75, from 2015-2016. Students of the second batch support the former Ambassadors’ efforts to building a greener and sustainable future, emphasising their commitment to supporting sustainable development in the region, as well as Emirati Youth,” said Dr. Yousef Al Akraf, Executive Vice President of Business Support and Human Resources at DEWA.
