DEWA organises workshop on sustainability & climate change

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) organised a workshop on sustainability and climate change at its Sustainable Building in Al Quoz. The event was attended by sustainability representatives from all divisions at DEWA. These included Transmission Power, Marketing & Corporate Communications, Finance, Generation, Legal Affairs, Power & Water Planning, Customer Service, Distribution Power, IT, Internal Audit, Business Support & Human Resources, and Water & Civil. The move is part of DEWA’s ongoing efforts to support environmental sustainability and sustainable development in Dubai.

“DEWA organised this workshop on sustainability with the participation of Emirates Wildlife Society in association with the World Wide Fund for Nature, as part of its vision to ensure the Emirate’s continuous growth while protecting its natural resources. This contributes to promoting the welfare of citizens, residents, and visitors, and ensures a sustainable future for generations to come, and consolidating Dubai’s position as a global hub for trade, finance, tourism, green economy, and sustainability,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of DEWA.

“DEWA launches innovative awareness programmes and initiatives to encourage society to adopt positive everyday practices to rationalise their use of water and electricity. This is part of our efforts to support the Dubai Plan 2021 for Dubai to be a smart and sustainable city whose environmental elements are clean, healthy, and sustainable, and our vision to become a sustainable innovative world-class utility. DEWA organises a range of comprehensive awareness initiatives, programmes, and activities for the residential, commercial, industrial, and government sectors throughout the year. These efforts support DEWA’s strategic objective to raise awareness of all members of society,” added Al Tayer.

The workshop was held on 24 April 2016 and included panel discussions and a brainstorming session on sustainability. The workshop started with a speech from Paraskevi Siampani, Sustainability Specialist at DEWA. Siampani highlighted DEWA’s efforts in environmental sustainability to meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the capabilities of future generations. The speech also covered the effects of climate change and the criteria that DEWA has adopted to reduce greenhouse emission of gases.

Ida Tillisch, Director General of EWS-WWF, highlighted the importance of enhancing environmental awareness for all, which will lead to sustainable development in Dubai and the UAE. Tillisch commended DEWA’s efforts to achieve sustainable development and create a better future for generations to come. She expressed her appreciation for DEWA and its efforts to continuously organise events around the year to enhance awareness on adopting sustainability and conservation practices, and means to combat climate change.
