Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has participated in an environmental campaign in cooperation with Emirates Marine Environmental Group (EMEG). The campaign included cleaning up beaches of Jebel Ali marine sanctuary and planting mangrove trees. Individuals, school students, DEWA employees, students of DEWA Academy, and members of DEWA’s Youth Council have participated in the campaign. This is part of DEWA’s activities during the 20th National Environment Day, and reflects DEWA’s efforts to promote the environment sustainability in Dubai.

“The UAE’s wise leadership, namely, HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the United Arab Emirates, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi and Deputy Supreme Commander of the Armed Forces, pay great attention to The National Environment Day. This reflects the high priority that the UAE’s wise leadership gives to the development of a sustainable future, and raising awareness among society members, while encouraging environmentally-friendly practices including cleaning up natural sanctuaries and protecting wildlife according to the best practices and highest standards. DEWA takes the responsibility to achieve this by launching green initiatives and programmes, which supports national efforts and achieves a balance between sustainable development and environmental preservation. This will ensure the right of future generations to enjoy a clean, healthy, and safe environment,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.

“We are pleased to be co-organising this remarkable environmental campaign, through which we will clean up some of the Emirate’s most important natural reserves in Jebel Ali. We are pleased to cooperate with EMEG, as part of our commitment towards preserving the environment, and fully collaborating with stakeholders to achieve sustainable development. This adheres to the UAE Vision 2021, to create a sustainable environment in terms of air quality, conserving water resources, more reliance on clean energy, and implementing green development in Dubai, as well as Dubai Plan 2021 to establish Dubai as a smart and sustainable city, whose environmental elements are clean, healthy and sustainable,” added Al Tayer.

“The UAE is committed to preserving its environment, and has adopted ambitious plans to achieve this by protecting natural sanctuaries. The campaign to clean beaches in Jebel Ali marine sanctuary is part of efforts to achieve this goal. We have launched a number of initiatives in cooperation with different government entities to promote a culture of sustainability and conserving natural resources. This campaign aims to mitigate damage and protect natural resources, while promoting a culture of sustainability and green economy. This will be achieved by reducing and safely disposing waste. EMEG appreciates DEWA’s full support to preserve the marine environment, especially Jebel Ali marine sanctuary, by cleaning beaches and organising distinguished campaigns, and eco-friendly projects and initiatives,” said Major Ali Saqer Sultan Al Suwaidi, President of EMEG.

DEWA’s efforts to preserve natural resources has enabled DEWA to win many prestigious awards in the field of environmental excellence during 2016. These include the Five Star Environmental Audit from the British Safety Council, for five consecutive years between 2011 and 2016, and the Globe of Honour from the British Safety Council out of seven international organisations. DEWA was the first organisation in the Middle East and North Africa to receive this prestigious award five years in a row.
