His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has ordered real estate developers and companies developing touristic, commercial and cultural projects to install additional power generators to ensure seamless uninterrupted power supply in their developments.
His Highness’ decision was made during his visit to Dubai Water and Electricity Authority’s (DEWA) headquarters, where he was accompanied by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince, Chairman of the Executive Council of Dubai; HH Sheikh Maktoum bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Deputy Ruler of Dubai; HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Chairman of Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Knowledge Foundation; HH Sheikh Mansour bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum; and H.E. Khalifa Saeed Suleiman, Director- General of Protocol Department- Dubai.
HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum listened to a detailed explanation of the recent power outage in Dubai Mall, and measures taken by DEWA to restore electricity to Dubai Mall, given by HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.
Al Tayer affirmed that all high-voltage lines connected to Dubai’s landmarks are in excellent condition. He noted that what happened in Dubai Mall was a contingent technical error as a high-voltage line that feeds Dubai Mall went out of service causing the power outage.
Stressing on the fact that all power stations in Dubai are working properly as per the highest international standards to ensure 24/7 of power supply, Al Tayer stated that DEWA immediately dispatched the necessary emergency teams with mobile generators. The team and the generators arrived at the site within 20 minutes. The generators could have been connected and power restored within that period. However, obstacles in the basement entrance to the substation prevented the generators from being connected. Electricity was completely restored after 98 minutes.
Al Tayer also stated that DEWA is committed to implementing the order given by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum immediately by obligating all concerned real estate developers, companies and contractors to install back-up power generators in the buildings and landmarks in Dubai. He noted that DEWA will directly follow up and supervise the implementation process.
