HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, visited the stand of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) at the World Future Energy Summit (WFES) 2018. His Highness was accompanied by HH Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Presidential Affairs, HH Hazza bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Vice Chairman of the Abu Dhabi Executive Council, HH Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of Dubai Supreme Council of Energy and President of the Dubai Civil Aviation Authority, HE Suhail bin Mohammed Faraj Faris Al Mazrouei, Minister of Energy, HE Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, Minister of State and CEO of Abu Dhabi Future Energy Company (Masdar), and a number senior officials.

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA, briefed HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum on DEWA’s clean and renewable energy initiatives and the latest developments of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. The solar park, which DEWA is implementing, is the largest single-site solar project in the world based on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model with a total planned capacity of 5,000 megawatts (MW) by 2030 and a total investment of AED 50 billion. Upon its completion, the solar park will save approximately 6.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum also viewed a scale model of DEWA’s new building in Al Jadaf, named Al-Shera'a (Arabic for ‘sail’), which will be the tallest, largest, and smartest zero energy government building in the world. His Highness also viewed a model of the 250MW pumped-storage hydroelectric power station in Hatta, which will make use of the water stored in the Hatta Dam. This is the first project of its kind in the GCC.

“We were honoured by the visit of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum to DEWA’s stand. We reviewed DEWA’s efforts in innovation and the development of disruptive technologies, in line with the vision of his Highness to anticipate and shape the future, and increase the percentage of renewable and clean energy in the energy mix. This supports the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 to transform Dubai into a global hub for clean energy and green economy, and provide 75% of Dubai’s total power output from clean energy by 2050. We also presented to His Highness the progress of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park. We have 213MW of photovoltaic power in service and a further 800MW of photovoltaic panels are under construction. A 700MW CSP plant is also being developed. We also presented a model of DEWA’s new building, Al-Shera'a, which will be the tallest, largest, and smartest zero energy government building in the world, as well as a model of the 250MW pumped-storage hydroelectric power station in Hatta, which DEWA is constructing to support the Hatta Comprehensive Development Plan. It is the first of its kind in the GCC,” said Al Tayer.

DEWA is participating in the 11th WFES as its Efficiency Sponsor. It is highlighting its latest and innovative renewable-energy projects and initiatives at the accompanying exhibition. WFES is organised by Masdar at the Abu Dhabi National Exhibition Centre (ADNEC), from 15-18 January.
