Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer. MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority

On the occasion of World Arabic Language Day, which supports the Arabic language and highlights its leading position amongst the world’s most important languages, we renew our commitment to supporting Arabic as a language of science, innovation and future. We undertake to maintain it as an Islamic value and national duty, in order to consolidate our historical roots and national identity.

HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, once observed, “Our national identity is integrally linked to the Arabic language, which serves as an effective medium to express our values, culture and heritage. Promoting the language will enable our future generations to connect with our roots, society and values more effectively.

With these passionate words, HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum highlights the special place Arabic holds in the hearts of its native speakers who recognise its importance, unique words, expressions, composition, and vocalisation. His Highness launched a series of qualitative initiatives to revitalise Arabic as a language of knowledge and science and to promote online Arabic content. The latest initiative is the Translation Challenge, a part of the Arabic E-Learning Project to translate 11 million words in science and mathematics, collating 5,000 Arabic educational videos and making them available to over 50 million Arab students.

As Arabic is the most important element of our national identity, DEWA is proud to follow the example of our wise leadership in elevating its status, in line with the objectives of UAE Vision 2021 to establish the UAE as a centre for excellence for the Arabic language and Dubai Plan 2021 to make Dubai a home for individuals who are proud of their culture.

DEWA strives to promote Arabic in our daily activities and in all our internal and external interactions, communications and services.
