Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) has participated as a Supporting Sponsor in the World Utility Congress hosted by the Abu Dhabi National Energy Company (TAQA) in Abu Dhabi from 16 to 18 September 2024. The conference and exhibition provided a leading platform for entities specialised in the energy and water sectors around the world to showcase their latest technologies, products, services and solutions, as well as discuss trends, technologies and innovations that affect future demand for water supplies and energy sources in the world.
“We follow the directives of the wise leadership to enhance the UAE’s competitiveness in all fields. We support the results of COP28, which the UAE hosted last year. We are please to highlight our efforts in clean and renewable energy during our participation in the World Utility Congress, which is an exceptional opportunity to explore the aspects of business growth in the sector in the UAE and the region, and highlight DEWA’s leadership as one of the best and most innovative utilities in the world. DEWA is a major supporter to the UAE’s ambitious path towards net zero by 2050. The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the largest single-site solar park in the world based on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model, is an essential part of our key role in the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050 to provide 100% of the energy production capacity from clean energy sources by 2050. The planned production capacity for the solar park is more than 5,000MW by 2030,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.
“DEWA has also implemented the Green Hydrogen Project, the first of its kind to produce hydrogen using solar energy in the Middle East and North Africa. We are also implementing the pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant in Hatta, which is the first of its kind in the GCC. DEWA adopts the latest smart tools and technologies to enhance its excellence worldwide. In 2023, losses from electricity transmission and distribution networks were reduced to 2%, compared to 6% to 7% in Europe and the USA. Water network losses reached 4.6%, compared to around 15% in North America. DEWA has achieved a new world record in electricity Customer Minutes Lost (CML) per year. Dubai recorded 1.06 minutes per customer, compared to around 15 minutes recorded by leading utility companies in the European Union,” added Al Tayer.
Jasim Husain Thabet, Group CEO and Managing Director of the TAQA Group, said the World Utilities Congress is rapidly establishing itself as the premier global forum for leaders in the power and water sectors.
“The event’s expansion mirrors the UAE’s growing influence on issues related to the energy transition, low-carbon development and climate action. As we advance the UAE’s Net Zero Strategic Initiative nationally and the COP28 UAE Consensus globally, utilities hold a significant responsibility to spearhead the transformation of the power sector, advance the build-out of efficient desalination and expand demand-side management measures. These elements form the cornerstone of TAQA’s growth strategy and are central to the discussion that takes place at the World Utilities Congress. DEWA’s participation underscores the vital role of collaboration and partnership within this crucial sector as we pursue decarbonisation commitments,” said Thabet.
