The Women’s Committee of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) organised a special event to mark International Women in Engineering Day. This reflects DEWA’s commitment to empowering women in the workplace and strengthening their presence in the engineering sector. The event’s programme featured panel discussions, workshops and a variety of engaging activities, drawing the participation of over 60 female employees from DEWA’s different divisions.

Fatima Al Jokar, Chairperson of DEWA’s Women’s Committee, emphasised that DEWA’s top management places great importance on empowering women, particularly in the energy and water sectors. DEWA celebrates International Women in Engineering Day each year to recognise the contributions of female engineers and promote innovation and knowledge exchange among them.

“We consider this day a key annual milestone, as it is not only a celebratory occasion but also a practical confirmation of the advanced position that Emirati women have achieved in leading vital projects, especially in clean energy, in support of sustainable development,” added Al Jokar.

Discussion panels

A session titled ‘Trailblazing Women: Overcoming Challenges and Expanding Horizons’ hosted Marwa Saeed Al Mamari, the first Emirati aerospace engineer. She shared her inspiring journey as an Emirati woman in engineering. The panel was moderated by Maryam Abdulaziz Khansaheb, Manager – Corporate Sustainability and a member of the Women’s Committee.

“Engineering is not just about building systems; it’s about building a future where innovation, resilience and inclusion go hand in hand. As an Emirati aerospace engineer, I believe that every woman in engineering today is paving the way for generations of dreamers and doers who will transform our world,” said Al Mamari.

Another session, titled ‘DEWA’s Female Engineers: Stories of Success and Empowerment’, explored the key challenges and opportunities facing women in engineering, and witnessed remarkable engagement from the attendees. The panel featured Afra Saif Alsuwaidi, Deputy Manager – Civil Maintenance; Mazoon Ghalib Mohammed, Senior Engineer – Engineering Fire Protection System; and Buthaina Salem Alshamsi, Senior Engineer – SCADA Database. The session was moderated by Fatma Jaffar Karim, Senior Engineer – Field Operations.

Activities & competitions

The day also included a variety of competitions aimed at promoting team spirit. During the event, the Women’s Committee launched the fifth edition of ‘#Your Day … as an Engineer’, an annual initiative that enables female engineers to share their inspiring professional journeys and showcase their unique experiences.

Appreciation

The female engineers expressed their appreciation to DEWA’s senior leadership for providing a motivating work environment that promotes women’s empowerment and supports a healthy work-life balance. They also praised the Women’s Committee for launching quality initiatives aimed at developing the technical and leadership skills of female engineers and employees, in line with DEWA’s strategic focus on innovation and sustainability.
