The Electric Vehicle (EV) Green Charger Initiative was launched in line with the visionary goals of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The aim is to make Dubai the smartest and happiest City in the world, and be a leading global example of intelligent urban development while promoting eco-friendly transportation. This initiative led to the creation of the region's first public charging infrastructure for electric vehicles. In 2015, DEWA installed 100 EV Green Chargers at strategic locations in the Emirate of Dubai to encourage electric vehicle adoption.
Since then, the network has expanded to over 380 Green Chargers across Dubai, with plans to reach 1,000 Green Chargers by 2025.
DEWA remains resolute in its commitment to adopting sustainable mobility solutions and exploring innovative technologies to enhance the electric vehicle sector. The EV Green Chargers are intelligently connected units through a Charge Point Management System (CPMS). Charger status and locations are accessible through the DEWA website and smart app and via 14 other digital platforms. Customers can start and end their charging cycles using their mobile devices by scanning a QR code at the station. DEWA is also actively researching and testing advanced mobility technologies like ultra-fast charging, mobile charging, and inductive charging to encourage green transportation and provide an innovative and added-value experience.
The types of green chargers include Ultra-Fast Charger (150 kW DC with ChadeMO and combo CCS sockets); Fast Charger (43 kW AC with Type 2 Socket, 50 kW DC ChadeMO and Combo CCS Sockets); Public Charger (2 x 22 kW AC, with double Type 2 Socket); and Wall-Box (22 kW AC, with single Type 2 Socket).
In July 2023, DEWA joined the Charging Interface Initiative (CharIN) as a core member, in a move that reinforces its commitment to advancing green mobility and energy. By joining CharIN, DEWA can actively participate in establishing industry standards for EV charging systems.
CharIN is a prominent global association with more than 320 members committed to advancing interoperable and unified charging standards such as the Combined Charging System (CCS) and the Megawatt Charging System (MCS) for all types of vehicles.
