AED 40 billion capital expenditure for electricity and water projects in Dubai in the next five years

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), announced that DEWA has plans to invest AED 40 billion on capital expenditure in the next five years including the expansion of renewable and clean energy projects. He noted that DEWA plans to invest about AED 16 billion to strengthen and expand electricity and water transmission and distribution networks, about AED 12 billion to complete the Independent Power Producer (IPP) projects in the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the Hassyan Power Complex and the Independent Water Producer (IWP) projects at Hassyan, in addition to completing other ongoing DEWA projects in infrastructure and smart systems. The Emirates Central Cooling Systems Corporation (Empower), which is 70% owned by DEWA, plans to spend around AED 3 billion mainly to expand district cooling capacity and network to meet demand growth for district cooling services.

DEWA achieves 98.1% in Dubai Digital Authority’s Instant Happiness Index until end of June 2022

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) scored 98.1% in the Dubai Government’s Instant Happiness Index by Dubai Digital Authority, until end of June 2022. For the past five years, DEWA has come first among large government organisations in Dubai Digital Authority’s Instant Happiness Index. In 2021, DEWA obtained more than 665,000 customer votes on all channels, achieving 97.9%, compared to 96.3% in 2020, ranking first among all entities that adopt the Instant Happiness Index. DEWA also scored more than 90% in the Happiness Index for the Government of Dubai customers, conducted by the Dubai Government Excellence Program 2021.

DEWA celebrates World Environment Day 2022

In conjunction with World Environment Day, observed on 5 June every year and held this year under the theme ‘Only One Earth’, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) organised several internal and external activities. It also launched an awareness campaign on its social media accounts to encourage society members to conserve electricity and water consumption and adopt sustainable practices that protect the environment and natural resources. These include using digital services, electric vehicles, installing solar photovoltaic panels, planting trees and reducing plastic.

Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, a key pillar to reach 100% clean energy in Dubai by 2050

In October 2022, the UAE launched its strategic initiative for net-zero emissions by 2050, to become the first country in the Middle East and North Africa to undertake such a strategic initiative. Dubai also launched the Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050 to provide 100% of Dubai’s total power capacity from clean energy sources by 2050. One of the most extensive clean and renewable energy projects that Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is implementing to achieve this target is the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the largest single-site solar park in the world. It has a planned capacity of 5,000MW by 2030 with investments up to AED 50 billion. When completed, the solar park will reduce over 6.5 million tonnes of carbon emissions annually.

DEWA’s electricity customers increase by 41%, and water customers increase by 44% in 5 years

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) announced that the number of electricity accounts reached 1,061,476 by the end of 2021 compared to 752,505 accounts by the end of 2016; an increase of 41%. The number of water accounts reached 960,032 accounts by the end of 2021 compared to 666,006 accounts by the end of 2016; an increase of 44%. The total number of electricity and water accounts reached 2,021,508 accounts by the end of 2021.

Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) received 3,823 requests for electricity connection through Al Namoos service in 2021 compared to 3,457 requests in 2020; an increase of 10%. By the end of 2021, the number of DEWA accredited consultants and contractors had reached 2,429.

DEWA raises production capacity of the first project of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park’s fifth phase to 330MW

HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD&CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), announced that the production capacity of the first project of the fifth phase of the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park has increased from 300 megawatts (MW) to 330MW. This results from using the latest solar photovoltaic bifacial technologies with Single Axis Tracking to increase energy production. The 900MW fifth phase, with investments of AED 2.058 billion, is 60% complete with 4.225 million safe working hours without injuries.
