Campaign contributes to saving 131 million kilowatts per hour of electricity and 336 million gallons of water in the first half of 2012 The Dubai Electricity and Water Authority’s (DEWA) Home Appliances Campaign, launched in continuation of DEWA’s sustainability and community engagement initiatives, has received an encouraging response from the public as shown by an increase in average sales by major manufacturers of eco-friendly appliances during the campaign’s period. The campaign, which is part of DEWA’s corporate values and sustainable development agenda to fulfill the long-term initiative Green Economy for Sustainable Development, and its vision to be a sustainable world-class utility, is aimed at the residents of Dubai under the motto, Do Good to Planet Earth. Through the Home Appliances Campaign, DEWA aims to educate the public on how to choose the most energy and water-efficient home appliances such as washing machines, air-conditioners, refrigerators and light bulbs, and integrate their usage into their daily lives in a practical and non-obtrusive manner. “DEWA is continuously working on implementation of the UAE’s vision to support the Green Economy For Sustainable Development initiative, recently announced by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the United Arab Emirates and Ruler of Dubai, to build green economy in the UAE through launch of this campaign to conserve natural resources and reduce consumption levels, and educate the community about the importance of choosing environmentally-friendly appliances, to reinforce DEWA’s role and responsibility to the community to achieve a sustainable environment,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA. “DEWA is also committed to implement the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030, which promotes diversification of energy resources and reduction in demand by 30% by 2030 through conservation awareness programmes. We have achieved impressive results through these campaigns as we succeeded in saving 264 million kilowatts per hour of electricity and 1.4 billion gallons of water last year and 131 million kilowatts per hour of electricity and 336 million gallons of water by June 2012.” “Through the Home Appliances Campaign DEWA has successfully engaged Dubai’s residents in energy conservation, making them aware of how much energy they are consuming at their homes. As a responsible corporate entity with sustainable values, DEWA aims to proactively help reduce carbon emission levels; mitigate the threat of global warming and climate change, and support the upkeep of our living environment by securing our precious natural resources,” said Khawla Al Mehairi, VP of Marketing and Corporate Communications at DEWA. “In light of the positive feedback from the public, DEWA is working on increasing the awareness on the importance of electricity and water conservation, especially by making proper and informed decisions when buying home appliances and devices with the assistance of all the involved partners, but most importantly with the cooperation of Dubai’s residents,” said Amal Koshak, Senior Manager of Marketing Communications, DEWA. In order to reinforce the success of the campaign, DEWA has partnered with major appliances manufacturers and suppliers, including LG, BSH Home Appliances, OSRAM, and Sharaf DG. These partnerships have enabled customers in Dubai to gain an understanding of what the market has to offer in terms of the latest energy conserving products, and made them realise that these products are within their reach.
