The UAE plays a key role in supporting international efforts to counter climate change, which His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, describes as ‘the most prominent battle for mankind over the coming decades, to preserve a healthy planet for generations to come.’ Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) spares no effort in supporting sustainable development in the UAE and Dubai, by promoting and enhancing the efficiency of renewable energy, sustainability and the environment. DEWA’s efforts have led to a significant reduction in carbon emissions in Dubai. Net carbon dioxide emissions in Dubai decreased by 22% in 2019, two years ahead of the Carbon Abatement Strategy 2021 target to reduce them by 16% by 2021. DEWA is also committed to achieving the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050 to provide 75% of Dubai’s total power capacity from clean energy sources by 2050. The percentage of clean energy in Dubai’s energy mix is about 9%, exceeding the target set in the strategy. The Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park is one of DEWA’s key projects to achieve this strategy. It is the largest single-site solar park in the world with a planned capacity of 5,000 MW in 2030 and investments up to AED 50 billion,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA.
“DEWA is committed to increasing awareness among all society members on the importance of electricity and water conservation and making it a lifestyle. The conservation programmes and initiatives launched by DEWA have achieved cumulative savings of 2.44 terrawatthours (TWh) of electricity and 6.7 billion gallons of water between 2011 and 2020. This is equivalent to saving AED 1.35 billion and reducing 1.22 million tonnes of carbon emissions. On International Earth Day, we are committed to conserving natural resources and contributing to finding sustainable and effective solutions to reduce waste. This keeps pace with sustainable development with its social, economic and environmental aspects,” added Al Tayer.
