Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) continues to cultivate a culture of sustainability among its employees, encouraging them to adopt environmentally responsible practices both inside and outside the workplace. During the first half of 2026, DEWA employees recycled 118,967 plastic bottles and aluminium cans through smart recycling machines installed across several DEWA buildings. Integrated with DEWA’s Smart Office app, the machines enable employees to earn points for each item recycled while also giving them a chance to win valuable prizes through monthly raffle draws.

Since the initiative was launched and the machines were installed in October 2022, employees have recycled more than 1.41 million plastic bottles and aluminium cans, diverting over 19.83 tonnes of waste from landfill by the end of the first half of 2026.

The initiative supports the Dubai Integrated Waste Management Strategy 2021-2041, which promotes innovation in waste management, recycling and waste-to-energy solutions while providing practical and sustainable responses to environmental challenges. It also aligns with DEWA’s Circular Economy Strategy, which is based on five key principles: circular design and the use of recyclable materials; optimised asset management; value retention and end-of-life treatment; promotion of renewable energy and energy and water efficiency; and activation of circular partnerships. The strategy further emphasises the role of DEWA’s value chain, including smart users, circular procurement and supplier engagement, in advancing sustainability goals.

DEWA achieved a 92.33% score in the Sustainability Culture Index in 2025, which measures employees’ attitudes towards sustainability and the extent to which sustainability principles are reflected in their daily lives.
