Supreme Council of Energy and World Energy Forum call for naming of World Energy Day on 22 October

HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, has endorsed an initiative proposed by Professor Harold Hyun-Suk Oh, President and Founder of the World Energy Forum to name 22nd of October as World Energy Day. This was discussed in a meeting with His Highness last Thursday. The Supreme Council of Energy has adopted this initiative and included it in the forum’s agenda. World Energy Day will be launched in Dubai, and will also be adopted by the United Nations to be celebrated annually, in the same manner as World Environment Day. This initiative will be further strengthened by the presence of over 40 presidents, and the commitment of governments and policy makers to put together a roadmap to implement a global energy sustainability system that benefits all nations and peoples and promotes a global paradigm that revolves around energy and supports a global economy and social development for all UN member states, and contributes to launching a global movement towards providing safer cleaner energy to all, and sustainability for mankind. A second meeting took place today including HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Supreme Council of Energy met with Professor Harold Hyun-Suk Oh, attended by Dinesh Kumar, Executive Director of the World Energy Forum, Dr. Yousef Al Akraf, Chairperson of the Logistics Committee for WEF 2012 and Khawla Al Mehairi, Vice Chairperson of the Media and Communications Committee for WEF 2012. The directives of His Highness were the central points for discussion during the meeting. The meeting focused on discussing directives issues by His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. His Highness’s directives tackled a number of global sustainability issues and the role of the UAE, as a global player in the field, to support the future of sustainability. His Highness has blessed this initiative and stressed the importance of the work done by the Higher Organizing Committee and providing the necessary support to the World Energy Forum 2012. The discussions between the Vice Chairman of the Supreme Council of Energy and the President of the World Energy Forum also touched on its agenda, under the theme Forum for World Leaders, how its topics reflect its objectives, and how it is organically linked to the Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The two parties also discussed the expected turnout of presidents, prime ministers, energy and environment ministers from all over the world, in addition to leaders of the world’s largest corporations from both the private and public sectors and subject matter experts and policy and decision makers from all over the world. This meeting comes within the preparations to host the World Energy Forum 2012 on 22—24 October at the Dubai International Convention and Exhibition Center. The World Energy Forum will be hosted outside the UN headquarters in New York for the first time. A host of ministers, ambassadors, journalists, VIP’s in addition to public and private sector representatives attended the conference.
