His Excellency Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy (DSCE), chaired the Council’s 17th board meeting yesterday at the headquarters of the Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA). Present at the meeting were Nejib Zaafrani, Secretary General and CEO of the DSCE and representatives from the Council’s member organizations. The board of the DSCE reviewed the successful ongoing implementation of energy efficiency initiatives in Dubai, including public-awareness campaigns encouraging the responsible use of electricity and water and to reduce waste. The meeting also discussed the progress of workshops held with local government departments to discuss energy efficiency and conservation and other initiatives driven by the implementation of the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy, which is targeting a 30 per cent reduction in energy demand in Dubai by 2030. Dubai Aluminium Company Ltd (Dubal), a member of the Council, presented to the board on its 2010-2011 energy optimisation programme, which has achieved substantial energy savings, reduced carbon dioxide emissions, a solar power pilot project, and various synergies with DEWA. “These energy-efficiency initiatives are integral to the realisation of a green economy and must take centre stage. Although there has been an increase of electricity and water customers in Dubai, we have recorded a clear overall reduction in demand as a result of our demand management system, operational efficiency and awareness campaigns,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of DSCE. The DSCE board also discussed areas of collaboration with the United States’ government and private entities following the Council’s successful visit to the US in April, 2012. The Council board members were also briefed about preparations for the World Energy Forum taking place in Dubai this year from October 22-24. It is the first time this prestigious gathering of global energy decision-makers is being held outside of New York.
