Dubai becomes the Hub for Green Economy

WGES is the most prominent sustainability event on global map Dubai, UAE – 19th April, 2014: The United Arab Emirates represented by the Emirate of Dubai has made an unprecedented record, not only regionally but also globally, in its march towards sustainability and green economy. This new achievement comes in line with the visionary leadership and the directives of HH Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the UAE President, and HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. This achievement comes also as a culmination to the UAE Vision 2020, the long term national initiative “Green Economy For Sustainable Development”, and “Dubai Green Economy Partnership” launched by HH Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai Crown Prince and Chairman of the Dubai Executive Council, as a global initiative to promote partnership between both public and private sectors to encourage green and sustainable growth. In this context, the World Green Economy Summit (WGES) closed at a great unexpected success by issuing recommendations of Dubai Declaration, which includes commitments aiming to promote Dubai’s position as a global hub for green economy. This was emphasized by HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy (DSCE), MD and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and Chairman of the World Green Economy Summit (WGES) which was organized under the patronage of HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. “Dubai will support the UN, R20, and World Climate to the Road to Paris. This process among business, finance, and government to facilitate a binding agreement in Paris 2015, has started here at the World Green Economy Summit 2014, will continue at the World Climate Regions Summit in October 2014 in Paris, and will be again here at the World Green Economy Summit 2015; and then go to Paris to be present there during the COP21 negotiations,” added His Excellency. “The seminars, which witnessed wide participation from top governments’ officials, international concerned organizations, experts and professionals, enriched the Summit by sharing ideas, views, expertise and aspirations to achieve green economy. Green Economy has become a hope of humanity for sustainable economy, and a social and economic development that ensures welfare and prosperity, combat poverty, and open up new horizons to materialize peoples’ aspirations of a better tomorrow.” “The Summit closed up with recommendations of Dubai Declarations, which outlined Dubai’s commitments at global levels. This Summit, along with the other global and high-profile Forums, Convergences and Events, placed Dubai at a global position to be the most preferred hub for green economy and one of the leaders of sustainable development both regionally and globally,” said His Excellency. Waleed Salman, EVP-Strategy and Business Development at DEWA and Secretary General of the Organizing Committee of the WGES said: “National organizations, including Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Ministry of Energy, Ministry of Environment and Water, Dubai Electricity and Water Authority, Masdr City and Dubai Supreme Council of Energy participated actively and effectively in the Summit. Also international organizations, including United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), and a wide range of senior officials from the region and from all over the world were present at the Summit. All these efforts helped enrich the Seminars, which led concluding important recommendations to be added to those from other similar global events in this field,”
