Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) is continuing its Neighbourhood Campaign to raise awareness on the importance of saving electricity and water, and promote social work and direct contact with all society in residential areas. The campaign supports DEWA’s continuous efforts to raise environmental awareness among all society and promote the sustainable development of Dubai. The campaign includes field visits by a specialist team from DEWA to several neighbourhoods and housing complexes. They share a specially-designed bus for the campaign with Dubai Police. The team provides advice to all members of society on ways to rationalise consumption and how to live a sustainable and environment-friendly lifestyle. “To support our vision to become a sustainable innovative world-class utility, DEWA launches awareness programmes and innovative initiatives to encourage all members of society to adopt positive practices in their daily lives that contribute to rationalising the use of electricity and water. Over the past six years, DEWA achieved concrete results thanks to its conservation initiatives. It managed to save 1,163 GWh of electricity and 5.4 billion imperial gallons of water. This is equivalent to AED752 million, and over 536,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD & CEO of DEWA. “The Neighbourhood campaign has achieved great results in raising environmental awareness among the people of Dubai. It has been expanded in geographical scope to include all residential areas of Dubai. The campaign addresses both adults and children. It is important to instil a culture of the responsible use of resources by different age groups, and promote them to practices that strengthen the foundations of environmental sustainability in Dubai,” added Al Tayer. During the first phase of this year's campaign, the Neighbourhood campaign team, in collaboration with a number of developers in the Emirate, visited Sky Courts Towers on Dubai – Al Ain Road, and Armada Towers in Jumeirah Lakes Towers. DEWA distributed awareness bulletins and its Green Boxes, which contain LED bulbs and fixtures for saving water. Last year, the Neighbourhoods Campaign team visited three public parks and 1,641 houses in 27 neighbourhoods. These included Al Hebab, Al Faqa, Al Margham, Hatta, Al Lusaily, Al Marmoom, Al Aweer, and other residential areas in Dubai. The campaign succeeded in saving 714,000 kWh of electricity and 13 million imperial gallons of water, 329,000 kg of carbon dioxide emissions. Savings were valued at approximately AED829,000.
