Executive Committee of Dubai Supreme Council of Energy reviews work on Demand Side Management Strategy

The Executive Committee of Dubai Supreme Council of Energy held its 8th meeting at the Council’s headquarters to review work on the Demand Side Management Strategy. The meeting was attended by Yousef Jebril, Executive Vice President of Power and Water Planning at Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) and Vice Chairman of the Committee, Abdullah Rafi, Assistant General Manager for Electricity and Water Planning at Dubai Municipality, Faisal Ali Rashid, Director of Demand Side Management at the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, Graeme Sims, Executive Director of the Regulatory and Supervisory Bureau for Electricity and Water in Dubai, Stephane Le Gentil, CEO of Etihad ESCO, Samer Khoudeir, Chief Sales & Marketing Officer at EmPower, Shamma Al Rahmah, Manager of Business Planning and Performance Management at Emirates National Oil Company (ENOC), and Mustafa Alyousuf, Member of the Regulatory and Supervisory Bureau for Electricity & Water in Dubai. “The Executive Committee of Dubai Supreme Council of Energy was launched to supervise the implementation of the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030 that has set a goal to reduce demand for energy by 30% by 2030. The Committee also plays a role in helping achieve the Dubai Plan 2021, to make Dubai a sustainable and innovative city in resource management. The Committee today reviewed work and improvements on Demand Side Management Strategy and discussed possibilities for creating a commission to strengthen communication and cooperation between government organisations in all subjects related to energy and water management,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice Chairman of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy. “The Committee reviewed the Green Procurement initiative which was launched to organise the purchasing processes for products related to electricity and water in all departments of the Supreme Council of Energy. The purchasing requests are then presented to the Supreme Council board members for final approval,” said HE Ahmed Buti Al Muhairbi, Secretary General of the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy. “We expect to reach 8-10% savings in energy demand by 2020 and we look forward to enhancing cooperation between all the relevant parties to achieve the goals of the Demand Side Management Strategy,” he added. The Demand Side Management Strategy was launched by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy in June 2013. The Executive Committee of Dubai Supreme Council of Energy is responsible for implementing the Demand Side Management Strategy and supporting the relevant organisations. The strategy has 8 programmes to manage energy demand. These include: green building regulations, retrofitting of existing buildings, district cooling, wastewater reuse, laws and standards to raise efficiency, and energy-efficient street lighting. The energy demand-side management strategy uses enabling mechanisms in line with international best practices and similar programmes implemented globally. These include organisations, capacity-building, public awareness and appropriate policy and regulatory frameworks, information systems and measurement, and suitable funding mechanisms for Dubai.
