HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer delivers a speech at Kazakhstan’s pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai

At the invitation of the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA), took part in the Green Day activities that were organised in Kazakhstan’s pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai. The event was attended by Yerenchinov Daniyar, Chairman of the Board of Directors, International Green Technologies and Investment Projects Center, NJSC (IGTIC), Umarov Ermek, Deputy Chairman of the Committee for Environmental Regulation and Control of the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources of the Republic of Kazakhstan, Aigul Solovyova, Chairman of the Association of Environmental Organizations of Kazakhstan (AEOK), Zafar Mahmudov, Executive Director of the Regional Environmental Center for Central Asia (CAREC), and a number of officials from Kazakhstan.

In his speech during the event, Al Tayer welcomed guests of Dubai and the UAE, noting that the United Arab Emirates and the Republic of Kazakhstan have held strong friendly ties for over 29 years and have established strong trading bonds. He shared DEWA’s experience in promoting green technologies and its efforts in green economy and sustainable development and highlighted some of DEWA’s key programmes and initiatives to achieve the vision and directives of the wise leadership towards a brighter and more sustainable future for generations to come.

“We have a clear strategy and specific targets to increase the share of clean and renewable energy in Dubai’s energy mix. DEWA launched pioneering projects and initiatives to diversify clean energy sources. These include all available clean and renewable energy sources and technologies in Dubai such as solar photovoltaic systems, Concentrated Solar Power (CSP), green hydrogen production using solar power, pumped-storage water technology at Hatta hydroelectric power plant, and electricity generation from wind power.  One of DEWA’s key projects to achieve this is the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the largest single-site solar park in the world based on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model, with a planned capacity of 5,000 megawatts (MW) by 2030. The Solar Park’s projects constitute one of the key pillars of the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, and aims to provide 75% of Dubai’s total power capacity from clean energy sources by 2050,” said Al Tayer.

“DEWA’s business portfolio and sources of income are diversified through companies related to its core business and contribute to achieving its strategic goals. Key organisations include Digital DEWA, the digital arm of DEWA, which includes Moro Hub Data Integrated Solutions, and the Green Fund, an investment fund that serves clean energy projects. DEWA adopts innovation, the latest disruptive technologies and the Fourth Industrial Revolution applications to enhance its resilience and capacity to provide solutions that facilitate the transition to a green economy. As part of the Shams Dubai initiative to install photovoltaic solar panels in houses and buildings in Dubai, DEWA has connected 6,833 solar systems in buildings in Dubai with its electricity grid, with a total capacity of 352 MW. DEWA has also adopted the Reverse Osmosis technology for the desalination of seawater. This is part of our efforts to depend fully on clean energy for water desalination by 2030,” he added.

“We look forward to strengthening business ties in these areas to share experiences and best practices, and explore opportunities for joint projects. I trust that we will have a fruitful experience,” concluded Al Tayer.
