“The UN General Assembly’s adoption of 26 January, which marks the anniversary of the founding of the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), as the International Day of Clean Energy, is a significant step. It highlights that countries seek to adopt innovative solutions to accelerate the transition towards using clean and renewable energy sources. The UAE, which co-sponsored the draft resolution along with Panama, is one of the leading countries in clean energy solutions, thanks to the vision and directives of His Highness Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, President of the UAE, and His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. The UAE Consensus, which was approved by representatives of 197 countries, in addition to the European Union during COP28, which the UAE hosted at Expo City Dubai, is an exceptional watershed in international climate action. It includes firm pledges by countries to take immediate and ambitious measures to reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and puts the world on the right climate action path to achieve a sustainable Planet Earth,” said HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, MD and CEO of Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA).

“At DEWA, we are proud of the achievements we have made in clean energy through prominent projects. The most prominent of these projects is the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, the largest single-site solar park in the world, based on the Independent Power Producer (IPP) model. It will have a production capacity of 5,000MW by 2030 using photovoltaic solar panels and Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) technologies and a pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant that DEWA is implementing in Hatta. The 250MW station is the first of its kind in the GCC. We have implemented a green hydrogen pilot project at the Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum Solar Park, which is the first in the Middle East and North Africa to produce hydrogen using solar energy.  It stores the hydrogen and then converts it into electricity, in addition to other uses in the transportation and industrial sectors. With the directives of our wise leadership, we will continue to implement pioneering projects to increase the share of clean and renewable energy in line with the Dubai Clean Energy Strategy 2050, and the Dubai Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050 to provide 100% of energy production capacity from clean energy sources by 2050,” added Al Tayer.
