DUBAI SUPREME COUNCIL OF ENERGY LAUNCHES ‘STATE OF ENERGY REPORT’ IN DUBAI

Publication Unveiled on the occasion of World Energy Day 2013 and Expo 2020 Theme Symposium in Dubai The Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, in partnership with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) and the Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence (DCCE) has unveiled the first edition of the State of the Energy Report. This supports the Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative launched by HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai, and the UAE Vision 2021. The report aims to build a collaborative platform to enable a knowledge economy to spur growth of both green and sustainable development. This publication was unveiled on the occasion of World Energy Day, which was endorsed by HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum and adopted by 54 other countries around the world in addition to representatives from the United Nations, the Arab League and the African Union, when the Dubai Declaration of Energy for All codified on 22 October, 2012 that this same date shall be observed annually as World Energy Day. The publication was launched at a press conference by HH Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of both the Supreme Council of Energy and the Expo 2020 Higher Bid Committee, including HE Saeed Mohammed Al Tayer, Vice-Chairman of the Supreme Council of Energy, HE Helal Al Marri, Chairman of the Department of Tourism and Commerce Marketing, Executive Director of the Dubai World Trade Centre, and Member of the Expo 2020 Higher Bid Committee, HE Ahmad Al Muhairbi, Secretary General of the Supreme Council of Energy, Waleed Salman, Chairman of the DCCE, and Dr. Kishan Khoday, Regional Practice Leader for Energy and Environment with the UNDP, dignitaries from the Supreme Council of Energy, the report’s supporters and sponsors, and representatives from national and international media. HH Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, inaugurated the report on the occasion of the EXPO 2020 Theme Symposium, which is a major milestone in the bid to host the World Expo 2020 in Dubai. During the symposium, the report will be presented to over 200 international delegates from the 167 member countries of the Bureau International des Expositions. “Energy is one of the main components for sustainable development and the foundation for a positive environment that encourages collaboration, partnership, creativity, and innovation. Today, we are pleased to launch the first edition of the State of Energy Report 2014, which describes our way forward to build a green future for generations to come. First and foremost, this report is a reference for all the necessary knowledge and best practices for the energy sector, produced by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy, the United Nations Development Programme and in cooperation with the Dubai Carbon Centre of Excellence. This report provides the basis for a knowledge economy, which will be one of the main factors for the successful achievement of the vision of our wise leadership to transform Dubai into a Smart City, which imbues the characteristics of creativity and strong partnerships between the public and private sectors through new ideas that accompany the rapid and continuous changes that affect the entire world,” said HH Sheikh Ahmed Bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman of the Supreme Council of Energy. “This report is one of the main creative steps for achieving the Green Economy for Sustainable Development initiative of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai. This will further strengthen the vision of the UAE Vision 2021 that the UAE becomes one of the best countries in the world,” he added. “The content within the report tackles issues, discussions, and projects that focus on the exchange of regional and international expertise from our key partners, amongst them the United Nations Development Programme. This information is essential because it defines the competencies specific to the region that will enable a Leadership-By-Example approach that will develop possible pursuits that are designed to challenge conventional practices and encourage innovation.” “Major events and exhibitions in Dubai that focus on energy are key examples of our strategy, and provide the insights on building a green economy for all nations. The knowledge and practices gained from them will set international standards for energy efficiency and its use. This encompasses the vision of Dubai Expo 2020,” His Highness concluded. The State of Energy Report is a knowledge product, which was developed to capture the replicable and scalable success stories of Dubai, which can provide a function of environmental and social development across the Arab States. “The report supports the vision of HH Sheikh Mohammed Bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai and reflects the efforts exerted by the Dubai Supreme Council of Energy for Dubai’s energy sector to achieve sustainable development. The report is an action plan and a guidebook comprising all the relevant details for the energy sector and developments with a special focus on green initiatives pursuant to the Dubai Integrated Energy Strategy 2030,” said Al Tayer. “It is our privilege to launch the State of Energy Report for the Emirate of Dubai. This report is an outlook for the energy sector in Dubai, which includes different views by energy experts from local, regional and global perspectives,” stated Al Muhairbi. “The State of Energy Report 2014, in its first edition, is the Emirate's exercise in benchmarking its own achievements against best practices that are driving renewable energy, energy diversification and efficiency worldwide. The report will be published every year to enable us to document Dubai’s progress and share repeatable success stories across the region on an annual basis,” said Salman. “Sustainable energy has emerged as a major development priority for countries around the world, with a critical role to be played by sub-national and local partners like Dubai. The expansion of sustainable energy in the Arab region can be a vital part of the region’s drive to achieve sustainable development. The UNDP is pleased to be a partner to partners across the Arab region as they seek to lead innovation in policy and technology, and create the foundations for a sustainable energy future, said Dr. Khoday. By encouraging green investment and green growth, the UAE is becoming a leading green and sustainable economy in the region and the world. State of the Energy Report The State of Energy Report has seven categories, each representing a key pillar in the environment and energy sectors.
