‘Conservation Award for a Better Tomorrow’ Roadshow by DEWA and KHDA visits Dubai’s educational institutions

The team leading the Conservation Award for a Better Tomorrow, organised by Dubai Electricity and Water Authority (DEWA) in cooperation with the Knowledge and Human Development Authority (KDHA), has organised several visits to various educational institutions across Dubai.

The Award aims to encourage educational institutions to adopt best practices in rationalising their use of electricity and water and conserve natural resources, as well as spreading environmental awareness amongst students. The visiting team conducted seminars and workshops to introduce the Award, its goals and ways of participation.

The team met faculty members, teachers, working staff, and students, and highlighted the advanced results and achievements of DEWA in reducing wastage in the educational sector over the past few years. The team also provided detailed explanations of the simple methods and practices that could be adopted as part of daily life to achieve best results in rationalising consumption.

“In its ninth year, the Award honours the best applied and practical methods of reducing electricity and water use and cutting down on wastage. A multitude of Dubai’s public and private educational institutions have been approached, including nurseries and kindergartens, primary, elementary, intermediate, and high schools, colleges and universities, adult education centres, and special needs centres to raise their environmental awareness in line with supporting DEWA’s strategy to drive sustainable development in Dubai.

The tour included field visits to several educational institutions,” said Amal Koshak, Senior Manager of Marketing Communications. “In collaboration with KHDA, DEWA has adopted a new approach where we invite students to participate in exhibitions to educate them on the Award and its objectives.

This enables us to save time and effort while providing a positive environment for students,” added Koshak. The last Award achieved outstanding savings in electricity and water consumption by educational Institutions, faculty members, and students achieving a reduction in electricity consumption by 8%, and water consumption by 27% compared to the 2011-2012 consumption results.

The Residential Consumer category succeeded in saving 28% and 32% of electricity and water consumption rates, respectively. The overall consumption saving was 21 million kilowatts of electricity and 144 million imperial gallons of water, which contributed to reducing carbon dioxide emissions by 10,000 tonnes and saving AED 16 million.
